Santa Fe in Kodachrome

Step 1 completed

I DID IT! 72 images made on Kodachrome in about a month, last one was taken a half hour ago. I’m filled with mixed emotions. I’m so proud of the work that I did really thinking about every image and how I wanted it to look. I knew I only had 72 chances, (as an example 1 of my Compact Flash cards for my DSLR can hold almost 10x that amount). Some images were spurr of the moment, others were in my head from day 1. I’m also a bit sad about the whole thing, I mean with Kodachrome being done where does that leave me? I think I am going to play with some other Chrome film in medium format and see what I can come up with for that, but it will be in Austin.

Step 1 is behind me, step 2 is easy for me: it’s sending the undeveloped film to Dwyane’s Photo developing, the only place in the world who still develops Kodak’s infamous film. They are very friendly on the phone and always have time to answer questions. If you have any developing needs for film give them a try, (after 2011 they are solely developing Kodachrome until new years). After they are developed I’ll be sending the negatives to Digmypics.com for scanning. There’s another place that I COULD send them to, but the idea of sending my Kodachrome to India doesn’t sit well with me.

Step 3 is going to be the FUN part… having my images back and being able to edit them and start working on the coffee table book, and then I can start taking orders for the book!!! More on that later. For now I am going to say be well, and I’m going to get back to packing. I’m leaving you with a fun video about Kodachrome at the Missouri State Fair

Back behind the camera

I’ve been quiet and I know it… I have a good reason! Like most people, I have a day job. Well the economy is tough and because of that my hours were cut to the point I couldn’t stay there and keep a house. Santa Fe is a city that is sustained by tourism dollars, that’s just a fact, my profession outside of photography is that of a computer technician/network engineer , and there’s isn’t an overly large demand for that in Santa Fe. So as of Wednesday I accepted a position for a large IT company in Austin Texas. This is a great opportunity for me and gives me a whole new area to photograph! I’m moving in a couple of weeks, but tomorrow I’ll be finishing up my photography in Kodachrome in Santa Fe as agreed upon. Here’s a skyscape that I like!

Photographing in Santa Fe and Las Vegas

Santa Fe is a lovely area with lots of sights and lots of events. Currently we’re in the middle of Santa Fe Indian Market: “Since 1922, Santa Fe Indian Market has brought together the most gifted Native American artists from the U.S. with millions of visitors and collectors from around the world.” It’s a cornucopia of sights and sounds and smells, lovely hand woven blankets, baskets, literally thousands of different styles of jewelry. So I decided to head down there with my camera and my precious Kodachrome.

Also I took my son with me and gave him my Canon P&S camera and was really interested to see what he would come up with: I have to say, I’m kind of proud of what he came up with: I’m including some of his photos that he told me he would like to show off.

We ended up driving out to Las Vegas, NM, and walked around their plaza square for a while as well, I took the camera now and then because I wanted to capture some images but not with my KC but just with the point and shoot…

One last note… I’m 75% done with my work and am hoping to be done by end of next week then off to Dwayne’s!

I am REALLY pleased with the results of this film, I am REALLY enjoying shooting chrome. What started out as just a fun project is really changing my work flow and how I use film. Please keep in mind these are lower res than the final Kodachrome project will be. The gallery can be found here I’ve used a different hosting for my gallery this time as I’m moving away from flickr and to smugmug.

Where I’ve been

Hey everyone, sorry I’ve been quiet the last few days, I have good reasons; Friday I had a gallery show in Santa Fe that had been in the planning stages and preparation for months. I am thrilled with the work I showed and think they are a powerful set.

Also I’ve been working hard to make the Kodachrome series nearly flawless and have been trying to get some interesting people to model for me.

I should be getting role #2 back from Camera and Darkroom tomorrow or Thursday and of course I’ll share my work with all you wonderful people.

FujiChrome came early

My images came early from the developer and they did a FANTASTIC JOB! I’m only uploading a few of the ones I love the rest can be found over HERE at my flickr page for a few days. SOOO Excited!

Santa Fe Rail Yard is just so colourful!

I was literally laying in the rail road for this one.

Love this mural, may not be STRICTLY Santa Fe, but I love it.
